Virginia Health Care Foundation Launches It Takes a Village to Bridge Critical Gaps in Mental Health Care for Moms Across the Commonwealth

Press Release

The Virginia Health Care Foundation (VHCF) has launched It Takes a Village (ITAV), a new statewide program providing low- or no-cost counseling for pregnant and postpartum Virginians. Services are available in English and Spanish, both in-person and via telehealth, with no referral required. Nearly one-third of Virginia counties are considered maternal health deserts, making this initiative a vital step toward expanding access to care.

Funded through the Commonwealth’s 2025 MOMnibus package, ITAV connects moms to behavioral health therapists through community-based and healthcare safety net organizations. The program also supports workforce development for perinatal support groups and serves those with Medicaid, commercial insurance, or no insurance.

State leaders and health officials praised the launch, emphasizing that maternal mental health is essential for healthy families and strong communities. For more information and a list of participating providers, visit vhcf.org/ittakesavillage.
